Terming the situation in Delhi “horrific”, the Supreme Court on Friday said that COVID-19 patients are being ‘treated worse than animals’ in the national capital as the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise.
“COVID-19 patients are treated worse than animals. In one case, a body was found in garbage,” the top court said and sought an explanation from the Delhi government about fall in testing in the national capital.
Why has your testing gone down from 7,000 to 5,000 a day when Chennai and Mumbai have increased their testing from 16,000 to 17,000?” the apex court asked. The court said, that the “procedure of testing COVID-19 patients can be simplified so that more and more tests are done” and added that requests for coronavirus tests cannot be denied.
A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court said this while hearing the case regarding lapses in proper treatment of coronavirus patients after taking suo motu cognizance of the matter.
The top court said coronavirus patients were being stacked with dead bodies in hospitals and families are not being informed about their death.
Delhi has the third-highest number of positive cases with 34,687 patients so far and over 1,000 deaths, according to the Union Health Ministry. This despite repeated claims of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal that the city is fully prepared for the pandemic.
“The situation in Delhi is horrendous, horrific, and pathetic. (There is a) very sorry state of affairs in its hospitals that aren’t giving due care and concern to the bodies. Patients’ families aren’t even informed about deaths. Families haven’t been able to attend the last rites too in some cases,” the top court said while slamming the AAP government for not following the Union Health Ministry’s guidelines.
“Patients are running from pillar to post to get admitted while large numbers of beds are vacant. According to some reports, a government hospital in Delhi had bodies in lobby and waiting area. Inside the ward, most beds were unoccupied,” it added.
