West Bengal Govt Announces Complete Lockdown For 14 Days: Fresh Restrictions Announced

Amid the increasing cases of Covid-19 in the state of West Bengal, the government on Saturday has announced a complete lockdown for 14 days. The lockdown will continue till May 30.

The health department said in its bulletin, on Friday West Bengal registered its highest single-day spike of 20,846 fresh COVID-19 cases taking the total tally to 10,94,802.

The toll rose to 12,993 after 136 more people, including five eminent doctors, succumbed to the infection, the bulletin said.

According to the Union health ministry’s dashboard that India’s caseload of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) crossed over 24.37 million on Saturday after 326,098 fresh cases and 3,890 more deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours.

The death toll has now climbed to 266,207 and the total recoveries are over 20.43 million and constitute 83.50 per cent of the total caseload. The active cases stand at 3,673,802.

As the country is clocking a high number of cases and deaths under the deadlier second wave of the pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called Covid-19 an invisible enemy and urged citizens to continue following precautions such as wearing masks, maintaining social distancing.

West Bengal Lockdown: What’s Allowed, What’s Shut

  • All schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres will remain closed.
  • All government and private offices and establishments shall remain closed.
  • Essential emergency services will be allowed to function.
  • Shopping complexes, malls, restaurants, salons, gyms, swimming pools will remain closed.
  • Retail shops to remain open only till 7 am till 10 am.
  • Sweets and meat shops allowed to remain open from 10 am to 5 pm.
  • Medical shops and optical shops will remain open as usual.
  • Metro services closed, local trains and buses will remain closed except for emergency essential service personnel.
  • Private cars, taxis exempted from emergency essential services.
  • Goods carrier to remain suspended except for medical and food services.
  • All political, entertainment, cultural, religious gathering prohibited
  • All industries and manufacturing units will remain closed except for food and medical supplies and medical packaging services.
