The sub-lineages of Omicron were found in April in some parts of the world including South Africa. Last week, cases were also reported in Tamil Nadu and Telangana in India.
BA.4 and BA.5 are sub-variants of the Omicron variant circulating globally. These were first reported from South Africa earlier this year and are now being reported from several other countries.

Last month, scientists at Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) in South Africa detected the two new sub-variants of the highly contagious Omicron variant.
The only relief is that a large number of people are fully vaccinated. Being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 reduces the risk of severe disease and those infected may not need hospitalization or ICU.
