India is ready with one of the longest and biggest spiritual festivals of the country which is known as ‘Navratri’. Navratri is celebrated for 9 days and people fast to worship their goddess. It is said that fasting once in a while is good for health but for the people who are at or above the age of 50 won’t be a good idea.
According to studies and researches after 30, your body starts losing immunity and stamina and to keep yourself healthy you should keep focusing on healthy diets. From morning breakfast to good night dinner it is important for people above the age of 50 to take good care of each and every meal.
By the age of 50, your body becomes weaker including your muscles, cell repairing capacity of the body and also the bones. Some people prefer a total fast without eating anything all day and some people eat few things such as fruits or anything in sweet made of Desi Ghee which can not provide you the needed calorie and nutritions for your physical health. Most people in their 50s suffer from some kind of disease such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis issues, cervical problems and so on, fasting can make these diseases worst because at the age of 50 our body needs proper nutrition and some extra care.
By keeping a fast for the whole day can lead you to a lack ness of needed sugar, sodium, Vitamins and sometimes your BP may be affected. Especially fasting in the summer season can lead you to dehydration because the fasting foods do not give you enough fluids for the body. fasting can increase stress levels and disrupt sleep. Dehydration, hunger, or lack of sleep during a fasting period can also lead to headaches.
“Fasting can also cause heartburn, lack of food leads to a reduction in stomach acid, which digests food and destroys bacteria. But smelling food or even thinking about it during fasting periods can trigger the brain into telling the stomach to produce more acid, leading to heartburn” said Dr. Harminder Kaur.
“Fasting is really good for our body system if we do it at the right age and in the right way. In the time of summer it is important to keep having fluids to avoid dehydration” She added.
Even after knowing all the risks of fasting at the age of 50, you still want to keep up with the fasting try having good nutritious foods such as eat fruits, milk, foods containing sugar and sodium and also last but the most important keep having plenty of water or fluids.
