World Thyroid Day 2023: World Thyroid falls on May 25 and it is crucial to create awareness about the role of this vital gland and help people recognize symptoms of thyroid trouble. The thyroid is a tiny butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck. It is essential for growth, metabolism, regulating heart rate, and multiple organ function. However, it can be disturbed when it either turns less reactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism). It becomes underactive thyroid when the immune system starts attacking the thyroid gland. Some health issues like Graves’ disease, thyroid nodules, or follicular thyroid cancer can lead to an overactive thyroid gland. Physical exercises, stress management, and probiotics can improve thyroid function. A gut health nutritionist, Avanti Deshpande tells about some drinks that might be helpful.
7 drinks that might be helpful in hypothyroidism
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Its alkaline nature helps in regulating sugar and provides a sense of fullness for a longer time. 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with water after meals is enough to manage rising blood sugar.
2. Red Juice
A blend of beetroot and carrot contains phytonutrients and lycopene that are antioxidants. With its fiber, it should be consumed fresh.
3. Golden Milk
Golden milk or turmeric milk has many health benefits. Turmeric contains curcumin that has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. This drink can be made with almond milk or regular cow’s milk. Lakadong turmeric has the highest curcumin content.
4. Green Juice
A drink containing fresh spinach, amaranth, coriander leaves, mint, cucumber, lemon, and kale is good for thyroid function as these leafy greens contain chlorophyll that provides a healing effect.
It contains probiotics that help increase the gut microflora. A healthy and resilient gut eases inflammation which is seen in hypothyroidism.
