World Liver Day 2023: In order to raise awareness about the importance of liver health, April 19 is observed as World Liver Day every year. The day also makes people aware of how to maintain a healthy liver. The day holds significance as liver diseases are known to develop silently. As the disease has no visible symptoms, people tend to ignore it.
According to an estimate by World Health Organization (WHO), there has been a 100 per cent increase in the incidence of new liver cancer cases between 1990 to 2017. While two-thirds of them can be attributed to viral hepatitis, 16 per cent have unknown causes.
Take proactive steps to maintain a healthy liver
Among all, fatty liver is a prevalent health condition. It can be caused by excessive fat buildup in the liver. Most people suffering from fatty liver problems do not experience any symptoms. Also, the fatty liver does not cause any serious issues. But people need to be extra careful as in some cases it can even lead to liver damage.
According to Dr Anubhav Jain – Consultant, Gastroenterology, Paras Health, Gurugram -, people should prioritize regular liver check-ups. The doctor suggested that fatty liver disease can be deadly regardless of age.
“As a doctor, I have seen first-hand the devastating effects of liver disease on patients and their families. On this World Liver Day, I urge everyone to be vigilant about their liver health and to prioritize regular liver check-ups. Fatty liver disease is a silent killer that can affect anyone, regardless of age or lifestyle, and early detection is crucial for successful treatment,” Dr Jain said.
“By taking proactive steps to maintain a healthy liver, such as exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, and getting vaccinated against hepatitis B, we can prevent liver disease and improve our overall health. Remember, a healthy liver is essential for a healthy life. Let’s take care of it together,” he added.
