Zumba is a high energy form of aerobic exercise inspired by Latin dancing. It is a fun way to increase your daily calorie burn and physical activity.
If you want to lose weight, you’ll need to create a calorie deficit by burning more calories than you’re consuming it. You can do this by reducing your daily caloric intake, increasing your physical activity, or a combination of the two.
Noyonika Poddar, a student of Kolkata, and Pritha Bhattacharya, an English MA student first year and a professional classical dancer from Kolkata, shared their weight loss experience by doing Zumba, with Healthwire Media:
When and why did you start Zumba classes?
Noyonika Poddar says, “I started Zumba back in August 2019! So it’s been almost one and a half years!”
“Back in 2016, I was diagnosed with PCOS. My doctor had told me to keep a watch on my weight. Though I was never obese, I realized that I need to take up some physical activity. First, I joined the gym but didn’t enjoy it. I wasn’t consistent with it, and eventually left it. Within a few days, I started putting on weight again. That’s when I realized I need to do something I enjoy and Zumba seemed to fit these criteria.”
How did you stay focused to lose weight through Zumba?
“To be very honest, I didn’t overthink about my weight. I feel it was important for me to make exercise a part of my lifestyle to manage my PCOS. That is why I joined Zumba. But I continued simply because I enjoyed it so much. And whatever weight loss happened, happened in the process,” said Ms. Poddar.
How many days did it take for the overall transformation?
Ms, Poddar continued by saying, “At first, due to other reasons, I wasn’t consistent. But since, November 2020, I had been consistent with it. With the constant motivation from my instructor, Shreya Hunday, I stopped missing classes and slowly started seeing my transformation. I started with 68 kgs in November and over the months, I gradually lost weight, and I came down to 55 kgs in April. I have maintained that, since.”
What are the lifestyle changes you made during the journey?
Apart from doing Zumba regularly, I love going out on long walks as well. In general, I try to be more active physically. And along with that, I watch what I eat. I’ve eliminated dairy and refined sugar from my regular diet. And also, chose healthier grains like jowar, bajra, and ragi over wheat. This has helped me. But yes, I do binge occasionally, she added.
Lessons you learned from weight loss?
Poddar expressed, I realized that weight loss involves many aspects. Losing weight just to look better, is a minor aspect. What’s more important is I have more energy and stamina now. In general, I feel healthier, both physically and mentally.
Sharing her experience and tips for her Weight loss Journey Pritha Bhattacharya said, “I saw a live video of my Zumba instructor last year. The way she was doing it inspired me to embrace Zumba. So, I decided to do a bit of research on Zumba, and I found it helpful. Zumba is a combination of dance and exercise. Both are equally important for fitness and weight loss.”
“Zumba allows us to burn a lot of calories in a short period. Since I do it every day it helps me to stay focused. In my case, it took almost 4 months for the overall transformation,” she added.
She further added, “I changed my food habit. I decided to avoid fast food as much as possible and decided to eat healthy food and drink lots of water and practice dance every day. I follow it up with the session of Zumba”.
