Pranab Mukherjee had been admitted to the Army Hospital Research and Referral on August 10 to undergo a procedure brain surgery to remove a blood clot. He had also tested positive for the Covid-19, which was informed by the former President himself in a tweet.
Pranab Mukherjee was in a critical condition for the past 21 days following brain surgery. There was a slight improvement in Mukherjee’s health condition last week but in an update on August 19, the hospital had informed that the former President had developed features of lung infection.
According to reports, Mukherjee’s condition was critical and his health has worsened since yesterday. There has been a decline in the medical condition as he has developed features of lung infection. He was in septic shock due to his lung infection and continues to be in a deep coma and on ventilatory support.
Septic shock i.e. sepsis causes dangerously low blood pressure and as a result, internal organs such as the lungs, kidneys, heart, and brain, typically receive too little blood, causing them to malfunction. Most often, sepsis is caused by infection with certain kinds of bacteria which worsens lung function because blood vessels in the lungs leak fluid, which accumulates, making breathing difficult.
Pranab Mukherjee has not shown any improvement and his health status has remained unchanged since then.
Pranab Mukherjee had been president from 2012 to 2017. A veteran Congressman, Pranab has held important portfolios such as finance, defence and external affairs.
