Follow These Guidelines to Prevent and Recover from Food Poisoning this Summer
Summer is a season of outdoor activities and enjoying delicious food. However, it also brings the risk of food poisoning due to the warm and damp conditions that facilitate pathogen growth. To help you stay safe and recover quickly, functional nutritionist Mugdha Pradhan, CEO, and Founder of iThrive, shares expert tips for dealing with food poisoning during the summer.
Prevention is key to avoiding food poisoning. First and foremost, choose hygienic places to eat, and if you dine out, ensure they maintain proper hygiene practices. Store food properly by refrigerating it and using airtight containers. Practice good food hygiene by washing your hands before and after handling raw meat, poultry, or fish. Avoid cross-contamination by using separate utensils and cutting boards for raw and cooked food.
Boosting your immunity is another essential aspect of preventing food poisoning. Maintain a healthy gut microbiome by consuming a diverse diet of unprocessed foods. Minimize the use of antibiotics, processed foods, and excessive sugar. Additionally, monitor water quality and use a quality water filter at home or opt for packaged water when going out.
However, if you do experience food poisoning, here are some tips for a speedy recovery:-
Eliminate outside food completely and stick to homemade cooked meals to avoid further burdening your immune system.
Rehydrate yourself properly with fluids and electrolytes to replenish what you’ve lost through diarrhea.
Support your gut microbiome by taking good-quality probiotics, which can help fight gut infections and alleviate diarrhea.
Finally, rest well and conserve your energy to aid your body in the healing process.
