Dr. Ravi Kannan Conferred with Padma Shri for Treating Cancer Patients in Barak Valley

New Delhi, January 25-In continuation of the tradition of awarding distinguished citizens of the country who have accomplished exemplary deeds by serving humanity, this year too Modi government awarded 19 unsung heroes with Padma Shri for their great work in various fields.

Ravi Kannan (55), a surgical oncologist, or ‘Silchar’s Saviour’ from Chennai, , has been conferred with Padma Shri for being a “medical messiah for cancer patients in remote Barak Valley, Assam.”

He has treated over 70,000 cancer patients free cost in Barak Valley. His treatment includes accomodation, food, employment and spreading awareness.

He has transformed a rural cancer centre into a full-fledged hospital and research centre. Kannan also launched innovative measures of healthcare and doorstep including ‘home visits’ and ‘satellite clinics’.

Earlier, he had quit his job in Chennai and shifted to Assam with family in 2007 to make healthcare accessible in the Barak Valley. Before this grand step taken by him, the nearest hospital for Barak Valley patients was over 300 kms away.
