COVID-19: Things To Keep In Mind While Wearing Homemade Face Mask

The Union Health Ministry has recommended homemade protective face masks for the general public when they venture out of their homes.

A recent study suggested that widespread wearing of face mask could reduce COVID-19 transmission rates. Scientists from Cambridge and Greenwich universities said that face masks – even homemade ones – can prevent a second wave of the deadly coronavirus.

“We conclude that face mask use by the public, when used in combination with physical distancing or periods of lock-down, may provide an acceptable way of managing the COVID-19 pandemic and re-opening economic activity,” said the study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society A.

The Union Health Ministry has also recommended homemade protective face masks for the general public when they venture out of their homes. So today we are going to tell certain things that you should keep in mind while wearing a homemade mask.

1. It is very important to ensure that you are using 100 per cent cotton material for homemade masks. The other thing that you need to keep in mind is that it should be thoroughly cleaned before being stitched as a face cover. It is advisable to soak your fabric for 5 minutes in boiling water with a tiny pinch of salt and dry it well.

2. Never reuse the face mask from the reverse side. Also, thoroughly wash it after every use and ensure that you dry in sunlight for at least 5 hours. In case you do not have access to the hot sun, place the face cover in water in a pressure cooker and pressure boil it for at least 10 minutes, leaving it to dry, said the Health Ministry’s advisory.

3. Never use or let anybody use other’s face masks. Everyone should strictly use their own face mask.

4. You face should be properly covered with the face mask. A proper guideline has been issued in this regard. Click Here to read how to avoid mistakes while wearing a face mask.
