The government has enforced lockdown to curb the outbreak of coronavirus as social distancing is the only proven measure to break the chain of infection in the present scenario. But at the same time, you must keep yourself engaged in fruitful activities in order to be mentally healthy.

This is important especially for pregnant women as hormonal changes may take a toll on the woman’s mental health. This may cause stress, depression, anxiety, anger, and mood swings. But the good news is that the COVID-19 virus has not been seen to cross the placenta and affect the baby. So there’s no chance of your baby getting infected inside your womb.

Pregnant women need to stay positive during these times and should maintain a balance between mental health and hygiene. Health and hygiene keep you emotionally strong in the long term. There are certain things that pregnant women should do, especially during the lockdown, to ward off stress and anxiety.

Timely eating habits: Following a strict eating habits routine provides you with positive vibrations and keeps you motivated and energetic.

Include green leafy vegetables: Ample green vegetables make your diet wholesome as they are packed with calcium which counters muscle fatigue and soreness, during pregnancy. Spinach, fenugreek, mustard green, and broccoli are the best options to keep you stress-free.

Physical activity: Doing exercise of physical activity produces endorphins and they act as a natural pain killer. This helps you in getting sound sleep, which in turn reduces stress.

Relaxation: Include meditation and yoga in your early morning routine as they improve brain blood flow, increase the production of positive hormones (endorphins), and decrease oxidative stress. Acupuncture and medication too can help your body to produce endorphins.

Spend time with family: Lockdown has given us a great opportunity to stay with family and spending some time with them to help everyone de-stress. If possible connect with one family member or close friend on a daily basis over phone, video call, or email.
